Paint. What’s in your tin?

Paint - What's in your tinWhen we head off to purchase paint we’ve often one priority on our minds. Colour. And for 96% of paint purchasers, this is naturally the first consideration, followed by paint finish and quality.

But how many of us actually read the list of chemicals on the tin before we buy?

In an age where we are becoming more sensitive to the daily ‘assault’ of chemicals, skin or respiratory reactions are become more common place so checking your paint ingredients is of great importance.

Dr John McFadden, consultant dermatologist at St John’s Institute of Dermatology in London, said: “We are in the midst of an outbreak of allergy to a preservative which we have not seen before in terms of scale in our lifetime.”

The shade may be ‘hot’ but a painful skin reaction is not.

Some of you may have read about the poor lady who having decorated her living room, reacted terribly to the preservative Methylisothiazolinone, or MI, found in many household products including paints and even toiletries. It’s often used to prevent the unwanted growth of bacteria and yeast.

Mother-of-two breaks out in a rash every time she walks into her lounge after B&Q paint job.

But it’s not all doom and gloom! By simply being more aware of what we bring into our lives and indeed homes, we can avoid any potential physical side effects.

So other than the MI content, what else do we need check the tin for before buying?

A low or zero VOC level

VOCs are the harmful toxins emitted when paint dries so check the tin to see if this is a factor the manufacturer.

If you or your house hold inhabitants are predisposed to allergies, asthma, are sensitive, elderly or young, always choose a paint with a low or zero VOC rating.
